Mitch Mottram

The story

A trade,
then a business,
then an audience.

Not a CV. The order things actually happened in, and what each part taught him.

  1. 01

    Wickford, Essex

Born Mitchell Innes in Basildon on 27 April 2001 and raised in Wickford, Essex — son of Wayne and Sharon Innes, and younger brother to Karl and Bradley Innes. He later took the surname Mottram in honour of his grandfather. School was Bromfords in Wickford; the obsession was always how things worked — signal, cable, network, picture.

  2. 02

    Starting hands-on

It started with tools, not titles. Studying broadcast engineering and network engineering, then hired young by ITN to train — while learning the trade hands-on: wiring, cabling, CCTV, networking and installation in lofts, risers and plant rooms, where the only thing that matters is whether it works when someone switches it on.

  3. 03

    First business

Early entrepreneurship, learned the way most useful things are: by doing it, getting it wrong, and doing it better the next week. Quoting, delivering, invoicing, repeating.

  4. 04

    Broadcast

A progression into professional broadcasting and technology infrastructure — a world where deadlines are transmission times and there is no version of late that is acceptable.

  5. 05

    ITN

Approximately four years within ITN and broadcast environments, working at the technical heart of live news output.

  6. 06

    Major environments

Experience across projects and environments associated with ITV News, ITN, Channel 4, Good Morning Britain, BBC Studioworks, Formula 1, Royal Opera House and Deluxe Media.

  7. 07

    Building a business

Mottram Installation Group and Mottram Broadcast — turning a skill set into a company, a team and a body of work that exists in the physical world, reaching £6 million in revenue within its first three years.

  8. 08

    The next chapter

Business development, sport, media, live entertainment and content — the same instincts, pointed at a bigger audience.

From behind
the camera
to in front of it.
